The coast of the Kerala state consists of a maze of interconnected lagoons, lakes, rivers and canals. Transportation in the area is mainly by boat and the region has developed a distinct lifestyle, which makes it one of the Kerala's highlights. Trips through the area will take you to small villages on strips of land barely wide enough to built a house, and you will see numerous traditional boats with huge sails and prows in the shape of dragons.
The eight hour trip from Kollam and Alappuzha is very popular, but if you take shorter trips, you will be more likely to meet local travelers, which is more interesting. Local boats connect the towns of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Changanassery.
You can bet to the area via Kollam, which lies on the busy Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulum bus route and is also the crossroads of several railway lines. Kollam is 1865 km south of Delhi.
