Nouakchott

After Senegal and Mauritania became independent in 1960, Mauritania was left without a capital, so Nouakchott was founded on a fertile grassy plain. In 1960 the fertile area was very large and the capital was far away from the desert, but nowadays people in Nouakchott's outskirts fight a constant battle against the sand.
