Qobustan

Qobustan lies about 50 km southwest of Baku on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The whole town can be regarded as an open-air museum where Neolithic rock drawings can be found everywhere. The inscriptions total around 4000 and the oldest ones are 12,000 years old. Some of the pictures show people hunting and others show some sort of dances that are thought to have been accompanied by people hitting the so-called Gaval-Dashy, or Tambourine Stone; a special sort of rock that gives a low resonating sound when struck.
