Country Calling Codes

Country calling codes are also called country dial-in codes, international subscriber dialing (ISD) codes, or telephone country codes. They are telephone number prefixes to connect telephone calls to other countries. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) assigns numbers to countries.

The telephone country codes only apply if you call to someone in another country than yours. In order to connect to a country callign code, you must at least assign the international call prefix to exit from the national numbering system. In most countries this prefix is '00', or '+'. In the North American Numbering Plan, it is 011, while a minority of countries use other prefixes.

The world is divided into nine calling-code zones that are generally organized geographically, although there are some exceptions for political and historical reasons.
