Şymbūlaq (Шымбұлақ)

Şymbūlaq is one of Central Asia's major skiing destinations. It is also known as Chimbulak (Чымбулак). It sits at an altitude of 2,200 m (7,200 ft) in the Zailiysky Alatau, 25 km (16 mi) south of Almaty.

The skiing facilities are open from November to May, but the best time to go is during the months of January and February. On weekends and holidays it tends to get very crowded, but the rest of the time it is fairly quiet. Skiing equipment can be rented there.

Şymbūlaq is also a good place to stay if you want to explore the mountains of Zailiysky Alatau and Küngey Alatau, as well as the town of Medeu and the Bolshoe Almatinskoe Lake. Şymbūlaq has bus connections with Almaty.
