'Abū Kamāl (أَبُو كَمَال)

'Abū Kamāl (أَبُو كَمَال)

'Abū Kamāl is also known as al-Būkamāl (ٱلْبُوكَمَال). The city is located in the southeast of Syria, on the border with Iraq. The Al-Qa'im border crossing to Husaybah in Iraq is just southeast of town.

During the Syrian civil war the Free Syrian Army took over control of the city. In 2014, Daesh (ISIS) captured it. They stayed until 2017, after which the Syrian Army regained control. In 2024, Syrian opposition forces had captured 'Abū Kamāl.

There is little of interest to travellers in the city. The only reason you might end up there is to cross the border into, or from Iraq.

Because of aftermath of a civil war it is not recommended to travel to 'Abū Kamāl (أَبُو كَمَال), or any other destination in Syria at this moment.
