On the island of Öland are numerous ruins, fortifications and old wooden windmills. Many of the fortification date from the Iron Age and the Gråborg with a diameter of some 200 m (656 feet) is the largest of them. It can be found on the island's southern tip.
Also in the south of Öland is the museum-village of Eketorp. It gives an excellent idea of what a fortified medieval village must have been like. The ruins of Borgholm Castle are further to the north. The magnificent castle was abandoned and burnt in the 18th century.
On the island's northern and southern tips are two huge lighthouses.
During midsummer, Öland gets very busy with tourists. Accommodation is available in numerous towns all over the island. Öland is connected to Kalmar on the mainland by a 6 km (19,680 feet) long bridge.
