Al Khor (Al Khawr, الخور)

Al Khor (Al Khawr, الخور)

The region around Al Khor (Al Khawr) was ruled by 7 Bedouin families up to Qatar's independence in 1971. It is a coastal town, where most inhabitnats used to make a living in the fishing industry. Nowadays, tourism has become more important. Al Khor is home to a small museum, although it is often closed. Inscriptions in the ruins of a mosque, indicate that it was built in Ramadan 1372 AH (1953 AD). The ruined mosque offers excellent views of the ocean. There are several ancient watchtowers in Al Khor, some of which have been marvelously restored.

Some accommodation is available in Al Khor in the form of hotels and resorts. The town is 45 km north of ad-Dauha (Doha).
