Amani Nature Forest Reserve (Msitu wa Akiba wa Amani)

The Amani Nature Forest Reserve was established in 1997 to preserve the unique flora and fauna of the East Usambara Mountains. The reserve covers 84 km² (32 sq mi) of intermediate evergreen, submontane evergreen and tropical cloud forest habitats.

The African violet, or Saintpaulia, that grows in the reserve, is thought to have a spiritual component to the local Shambaa people. The Amani Nature Forest Reserve is an excellent place for bird-watching.

The Amani Botanical Garden covers 3 km² (1.2 sq mi) of the reserve. Locals in the region around the forest have historically always used it as a resource for timber and food.

The Amani Hill Research Station has been contributing to the research of malaria. You can still the the 1970s-era instruments there. It houses an interesting entomological collection (insect collection).

The reserve features several scenic waterfalls.

Tanga, 55 km to the west, and Korogwe, 35 km to the southeast, are good places to stay if you want to visit the Amani Nature Forest Reserve. The forest is located in the northeast of Tanzania, 215 km north from Dar es Salaam.
