Antsiranana

Antsiranana

Antsiranana is one of the few towns in the country where Arabs, Indians, French, Malagasies, Réunionais and Africans all live amongst each other. It used to be known as Diego-Suarez during Portuguese colonial times. The town lies in the north of Madagascar, about 765 km north of Antananarivo. It has a beautiful harbour. Antsiranana boasts several nice churches, as well as some scenic mosques.

About 30 km south of town is the Ambre Nature Reserve (or Ambohitra), which is mostly visited for its lemurs. Also nearby is the national park of Jofreville.

There are various hotels and restaurants in town. During the rainy season it is very difficult to get to Antsiranana.
