Ar Ramadi (لرَّمَادِي)

Ar Ramadi is the capital of the Al Anbar Governorate in central Iraq. It sits on the Euphrates River and it is the eastern terminus of a highway across the desert from the Mediterranean Sea. The town was founded in 1869 on a strategic location, which made it an important hub on the region's trade routes.

The British won an important victory over the Turks there in 1917. Ar Ramadi was heavily damaged during the Iraq War in the beginning of the 1990's. Later the Iraqi government and the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fought over it.

The town is also referred to as Ramadie, Rumadiyah, or Rumadiya.

Accommodation is available in Ar Ramadi. The city is 100 km west of Baghdad.
