Aragats Lerr (Mount Aragats, Արագած)

Aragats Lerr is Armenia's highest mountain. Its peak rises 4,090 m (13,420 feet) above sea level. It is a popular hiking destination with both locals and tourists. The southern peak of the mountain is the lowest one and the most popular hike. The trail is about 5 km (3 mi) long and it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.

During the 11th to 13th centuries, the Amberd fort and the nearby Vahramashen church were built at an altitude of 2,300 m (7,544 feet) on the slopes of the mountain. On the highway leading to the Amberd fortress is a so-called 'gravity hill'. Due to an optical illusion, a downhill slope appears to be uphill and the site is popular with tourists making videos of items rolling 'uphill'.

In the village of Aghtsk you can see a 4th-century mausoleum of the Arsacid (Arshakuni) dynasty.

Not far from the village of Artashavan is Alphabet Park (Tar’eri purak). It was founded in 2005 to commemorate the 1600th anniversary of the invention of the Armenian alphabet. The park features sculptures of all the letters of the Armenian alphabet, as well as statues of notable Armenians. On a hill not far from the park is a 33 m (108 feet) tall cross that is composed of smaller iron crosses, symbolizing the years that have passed since Armenia's conversion to Christianity in 301. Every year one cross is added and at the moment it contains crosses.

On the southersn slopes of Mount Aragats, near the village of Byurakan is the Byurakan Observatory, which was established in 1946. Not far from Lake Kari, at about 3,200 m (10,500 ft) above sea level, is the Aragats Cosmic Ray Research Station. It was founded in 1943 and it is dedicated to cosmic-ray research. In the village of Orgov is the ROT-54/2.6 radio telescope. It dates from 1985.

Aragats Lerr is 50 km northwest of Yerevan. The fort and church can be visited on a day trip from the capital.
