Asyut (أسيوط)
There is not a whole lot to see in Asyut, but the museum in the American College, has a good exhibition of Pharaonic and Coptic artifacts. Gezira il Mohz is an island in the Nile that is covered with lush tropical vegetation. It is often referred to as 'bananas island', and it is an excellent spot to camp or have a quiet picnic. One of Egypt's largest Coptic Catholic churches is located in Asyut.
Modern Asyut was founded in the vicinity of the ancient city of Asyut, which was also knwon as Lycopolis. The ruins of the old city can still be seen.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Asyut. You can get there by bus or train. Asyut is on the Nile river, some 350 km south of Cairo.
