Atuona
Atuona is the main town on the island of Hiva Oa. It used to be the capital of the Marquesas Islands, but it was replaced by Taioha'e on the island of Nuku Hiva. The town is dramatically set against the backdrop of 1,213 m (4,000 feet) high Mount Temetiu and Mount Feani, which is 1126 m (3700 feet) high. In Atuona are several monuments and relics to commemorate Paul Gauguin and Belgian singer/poet Jacques Brel, who both settled on Hiva Oa and were laid to rest there.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Atuona. The town is 1,400 km northeast of Papeete.
