Avanersuaq (Thule District)

Avanersuaq (Thule District)

Avanersuaq was the local name for Greenland's former Thule District, which existed until 31 December 2008. Since 2009, Greenland's districts were rearranged and the former Avanersuaq is now the northern part of the Avannaa region.

It consists of a large area of ice fields and glaciers, where, apart from the stunning surroundings, is little of interest. You will need permits to enter the area. Access between 15 September and 15 April is not allowed.

Dog sled tours are available in the area and it is also possible to organize hunting trips, or travel by sled between Qaanaaq and Siorapaluk.

Former Avanersuaq is some 1,500 km north of Nuuk. You can get there by air and by ferry, whenever there is a navigable way through the ice.

The best chance of good conditions is in the beginning of September and around that time one ship runs between Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat and Qaanaaq each year, to bring supplies to the region.
