Būr Sūdān (Port Sudan, بور سودان)

The British established Port Sudan in 1905. The seaport was used for the exportation of cotton, sorghum and other goods. Nowadays it is dilapidated and there is little of interest.
The railway station is north of the center, while the airport is south of town. Port Sudan is 655 km northeast of Khartoum. There are many hotels and restaurants in town, but during the pilgrimage period in October and November they are often full.
There are numerous mosques in Port Sudan, as well as churches and temples.
Interesting trips to the island-town of Sawākin (Suakin) 50 km south of Port Sudan can be arranged in town. The waters around the island are excellent for scuba diving and snorkeling. The resort of Arusa is not far from Port Sudan and has excellent beaches as well.
Because of civil war it is not recommended to travel to Būr Sūdān (Port Sudan, بور سودان), or any other destination in Sudan at this moment.
