Bamiyan (بامیان)
Bamiyan is the location where the two largest standing Buddhas in the world used to be. The two Buddhas, the earliest of which was thought to have been carved into the sandstone cliffs of Bamiyan in the third century A.D., where destroyed by the Taliban regime in March 2001. The largest of the statues was 53 meters (175 feet) tall and the other one was 36 meters (120 feet) tall. The area was inscribed in the UNESCO world heritage list in 2003.
