Baukau (Baucau)

Baukau, or Baucau, is the second-largest city in East Timor. It is a charming seaside place and the drive from Dili to Baukau along the coast is spectacular. There are several intersting sites in the city itself as well. They include some churches and colonial buildings. baukau has a lively market, a public swimming pool, surrounded by forest and a beautiful beach.

Baukau was severely damaged during the struggle for independence in 1999, but hotels and restaurants are available again. Baukau is 100 km east of Dili.
