Beslan (Áåñëàí)
Beslan is a dilapidated provincial town in the Russian republic of North Ossetia. Until 1941 it was known as Tulatovo (or Tulatovskoye) and later as Iriston. It was rernamed Beslan in 1950. The city made headlines in September 2004, when Chechen terrorists held more than 1000 hostages in a school. The siege ended with the deaths of some 350 people, half of which were children. Later a 'sorrow tree' was erected in the center of town.
There is nothing of interest in Beslan. Accommodation is available. Beslan is some 1400 km south of Moscow.
Because of random arrests of foreigners it is not recommended to travel to Beslan (Áåñëàí), or any other destination in Russia at this moment.
