Blantyre

Blantyre

Blantyre was founded in 1876 and was named after Blantyre in Scotland, in honour of explorer David Livingstone, who was born there. Blantyre slowly expanded and in 1956 it was merged with the neighboring city of Limbe. Nowadays, it's Malawi's centre of finance and commerce and the country's second-largest city.

There are only a few places of interest to travellers, including St. Michael and All Angels Church and the multi-purpose hall of the Blantyre Mission. Mandala House is the oldest building in Blantyre. It was built in 1882 in colonial style and nowadays houses a café, an art gallery and a library.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Blantyre. The city is 250 km southeast of Lilongwe.
