Bloomington's economy is mainly based on farming, while some electrical equipment is manufactured there as well. The city is known for the fact that in 1856 the state Republican Party was organized there. At that event Lincoln delivered his famous 'lost speech', of which no copy is known to exist.

There are several parks in Bloomington. Outdoor public swimming pools can be found at O'Neil Park and Holiday Park. The Miller Park Zoo is home to a variety of animals. The Genevieve Green Gardens at Ewing Cultural Center consist of beautifully manicured gardens, as well as a theater. The Ewing Manor sits on its grounds.

There is an indoor public ice skating rink at the Bloomington Ice Center. The Bloomington-Normal Constitution Trail is a 39 km (24 mi) long trail through the city. It is divided into a north-south and an east-west section.

Bloomington is the seat of Illinois Wesleyan University. Illinois State University is in adjacent Normal, which was formerly North Bloomington.

Accommodation and restaurants are available in Bloomington. The city is in central Illinois, 95 km northeast from Springfield and 1040 km east from Washington D.C. Bloomington is adjacent to the town of Normal with which it forms the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area.
