Boise


A gold rush in the Boise Valley attracted many settlers to the area and led to the establishment of a military post there in 1863. Later Boise was founded at the same location and the city grew as a distribution center for miners. It became the capital of the Idaho Territory in 1864.

Later, particularly after the construction of the Arrow Rock Dam from 1911 to 1915, the area developed into a farming region and Boise drew wealth from orchards and fields rather than mines.

Nowadays, irrigation, hydroelectric power and flood control projects associated with the Boise River have increased the area's agricultural yield. Boise has also become and important industrial center and is home to food processing industries, as well as companies that manufacture paper and wood products, computer hardware and software, semiconductors and electronics.

Many state and federal government offices are in Boise, as well as the Boise State University. Boise is an important trade and transportation center on the Boise River. It is the largest city in Idaho.

Point of interest
  • The Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial features a cenotaph, dedicated to the mempry of Anne Frank. It includes a small educational park. It is located in the vicinity of the Boise library.
  • Ann Morrison Park.
  • The Aquarium of Boise opened in 2011. The aquarium is designed around interactive tanks.
  • The Basque Block demonstrates the city's Basque heritage. The ethnic Basque community in Boise is one of the largest in the United States.
  • The Boise Center is Idaho's largest convention center. It opened in 1990.
  • Boise Little Theater.
  • Boise Contemporary Theater (BCT) was established in 1997.
  • ComedySportz Boise.
  • The Discovery Center of Idaho sits adjacent to the pond in Julia Davis Park. It opened in 1988 and its goal is to get youths interested in science, technology, engineering and math.
  • The Egyptian Theater opened in 1927, making it the oldest theater in Boise. It was formerly known as the Ada Theater. It is located at 700 West Main Street.
  • The Idaho State Capitol is the home of the government of Idaho. Construction of the building started in 1905, but it was not completed until 1912. The wings were added to the building in 1920. The building's architecture was inspired by classic architecture of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece.
  • Jack's Urban Meeting Place (JUMP) is a creative activity center in central Boise. It features workshops, exhibition space and facilities for public meetings. There is also an amphitheater in the building, as well as a collection of 52 tractors.
  • The Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts is located on the Boise State University campus.
  • Zoo Boise was established in 1916 and it is home to a variety of animals. The zoo is located in the Julia Davis Park.
Museums
  • The Basque Museum and Cultural Center is dedicated to Basque culture and history. It opened in 1985 and it's the only Basque museum in the United States.
  • The Boise Art Museum (BAM) opened in 1937. It exhibits contemporary art and it is located in Julia Davis Park at 670 Julia Davis Drive.
  • The Boise WaterShed.
  • The Discovery Center of Idaho.
  • The Idaho State Historical Museum was established in 1907. It was established to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Idaho. Its exhibitions focus on Native American, Basque and Chinese cultures. It is located at the Julia Davis Park.
  • The Idaho Black History Museum opened in 1995. It is located adjacent to the Julia Davis Park.
Religious buildings
  • The reform Ahavath Beth Israel Temple was completed in 1896.
  • The Boise Hare Krishna Temple and Vedic Cultural Center opened in 1986.
  • The Boise Idaho Temple opened in 1984 and belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • The Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, is colloquially referred to as St. John's Cathedral. It was completed in 1921.
  • The First Church of Christ is a Scientist church that was built in 1898. A new building was constructed in 1989.
  • The Vietnamese Linh Tuu Temple opened in 2016.
Parks
  • The Boise River Greenbelt is an interconnected collection of green spaces along the banks of the Boise River. Trails run the entire length of the 32 km (20 mi) long greenbelt, which starts at Lucky Peak Dam in the east and ends in Eagle in the west.
  • Camel's Back Park was laid out in 1932. It features picnic tables, play areas, an outdoor gym and practice fields, as well as facilities for tennis and volleyball. The park is located at 1200 W Heron Street, adjacent to the Camel's Back Reserve and the Hulls Gulch Reserve.

  • Julia Davis Park was laid out in 1907, on land donated by Thomas Jefferson Davis. It was the first park in the so-called 'String of Pearls' series of parks along the Boise River. It is located at 700 S. Capitol Blvd.
    • The Gene Harris Bandshell was originally built in 1928. It was dedicated to jazz pianist Gene Harris in 2001. Many famous artists have performed there.
    • The Idaho Black History Museum.
    • The Idaho State Historical Museum.
    • The rose garden was established in 1939, when 2,800 roses were planted.
    • Zoo Boise is located in the park.
Around Boise
  • The skiing resort of Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area is located 26 km (16 mi) to the northeast, beyond the city limits of Boise.
  • The World Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1984 in an effort to re-establish the peregrine falcon. Other rare and endangered species are also bred there. It is located at 5668 W. Flying Hawk Lane, just outside Boise.
The annual Treefort Music Fest is a popular event held in Boise. There are numerous hotels and restaurants in town. Boise is in the southeast of Idaho, about 3,290 km northwest of Washington D.C.
