The island of Boracay lies off the western tip of Panay is said to have some of the world's best beaches. Boracay's beaches look pristine, but beware, as the water off Boracay can be contaminated. Environmental tests in 1997 found the water unsafe to swim in. Follow-up tests however declared the waters to be within acceptable pollution limits, but caution is required. In 2018 the sewage system was renovated, possibly improving the water quality.
Boracay is a major tourist destination and there is a wide variety of accommodation on the island. There are also numerous café's and restaurants on Boracay. The island is about 320 km southeast of Manila.
