Bruges (Brugge - Bruge)
Brugge is Europe's best-preserved medieval city. Building of the city started in the 13th century, but when its river started silting, construction was suspended in the 15th century. As a result, most of the 13th-century center has survived completely intact and nowadays Brugge is like a 'living museum'.
Brugge has two medieval cores, the Markt and the Burg. In the Groeninge Museum you can see works from the early Belgium Primitives, while there are also many beautiful paintings, as well as antique furniture in the 14th-century Stadhuis (Town Hall). From the top of the belfort are excellent views over the city. The building lies centrally in Brugge and 366 steps lead to the top.
There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Brugge. The city has rail and road connections with most other places in Belgium, as well as London in the U.K., via Calais in France. In Brugge day trips available to the famous battlefields of Vlaanderen (Flanders). Brugge is in the northwest of Belgium, 90 kn northwest of Brussels.
