Burano

Burano and Murano are the best-known and most-visited islands of Venice's lagoon. Burano is famous for its fishing and lace industries. The village has distinctive pastel-colored houses. It is said that the soft colors have their origins in the fishermen's desire to be able to see their own houses when they returned home from a long day at sea. Burano is a lovely place to wander around and you can also cross the wooden bridge that connects it with the neighboring island of Mazzorbo, which is larger than Burano.

If you intend to buy lace from Burano, be careful, as the cheaper stuff is imported from Asia and not original! You can still see women working away at their lacy creations in the shade of their homes and in the parks though. If you want to learn more about the craft, you should visit the Museo del Merletto di Burano.

Burano is only 40 minutes by ferry from Venice, but you get the feeling of having arrived to a completely different world.
