Burlington was settled in 1773 and is known for Battery Park, which was the scene of an abortive British naval attack on 3 August 1813, during the War of 1812. It is the largest city in Vermont and an important port and industrial center. Electronics, computer parts, furniture, machinery and processed food are among the city's major manufactures. It had socialist administrations in the 1980's and 1990's and acquired a reputation for innovative urban policies.

Church Street Marketplace is a 4-block pedestrians-only shopping area in the center of town. Several festivals are organized there each year.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Burlington. The city is on Lake Champlain in the northwest of Vermont, 60 km northwest from Montpelier and 700 km north from Washington D.C.
