Byurakan (Բյուրական)
Byurakan lies on the slope of
Mount Aragats. It is home to several interesting sites including:
- The Artavazik Church dates from the the 7th-century.
- The 10th-century Basilica of Saint Hovhannes.
- The Amberd Fortress.
- A large khachkar Monument was erected in the 13th century. It is located behind the Artavazik Church.
- St. Astvatsatsin church.
- The Byurakan Observatory was built in 1946.
Byurakan is 6 km (4 mi) off the Ashtarak-Talish road, some 30 km northwest of Yerevan. There are many restaurants and large hotels in the town.
