Córdoba
Córdoba was founded in 1573 by the Spanish conquistador Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera. It was names after Córdoba in Spain. Nowadays it is Argentina's second largest city and home to numerous marvelous colonial buildings. Interesting sites in Córdoba include:
- The market.
- The Jesuit Catedral has a beautiful Romanesque dome and an altar made of stone and silver from Potosí. The cathedral is close to the Plaza San Martín square.
- The Cabildo, or colonial government house is right next to the church.
- The Manzana Jesuítica, or the Jesuit Block, is a group of buildings from the 17th century that includes the Colegio Nacional de Monserrat and the campus of the colonial university. The campus belongs to Córdoba's historical museum of the National University of Córdoba. The campus was added to the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 2000.
- The National University of Córdoba is the oldest university in Argentina. The Jesuit Order founded the university in 1613.
- The Jesuit Iglesia de la Compañía.
- The Monserrat School.
- The church of the Society of Jesus.
- The Neo Gothic Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is also known as 'Los Cappuchinos'. It is located in Nueva Córdoba.
There are many other architectural treasures in Córdoba's small city center. Also in Córdoba is one of Argentina's most important historical museums, the Museo Histórico Provincial Marqués de Sobremonte.
There are many hotels and restaurants in the city. Córdoba is 640 km northwest of Buenos Aires.
