Cabo Girão
Cabo Girão is a 580 m (1,900 feet) sea cliff that offers excellent views over Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. Cabo Girão means 'Cape of Turning'. The name derives from the fact that explorer João Gonçalves Zarco had sailed up to that point when he decided he had seen enough of Madeira and turned his ship around to land at a more hospitable bay to the east, where he then founded Funchal.
The sheer height of Cabo Girão is absolutely mind boggling and not recommended for people who suffer from acrophobia. In 2012 a skywalk was opened there.
