Cahora Bassa
In the 1970's, not far from the town of Chicoa, some 1075 km north of Maputo, the Zambezi River is dammed by the Barragem de Cahora Bassa. The water behind the dam started rising and nowadays forms the 200 km (130 miles) long lake of Cahora Bassa, nearly reaching the Zambian border.
Other than the stunning surroundings there is not much to see, but the area is great for hiking. The dam can be visited as well.
You can get to the area by bus. Every day several buses run between Chacao and Tete. Accommodation is available in both towns.
