Calumet (Michigan)
Calumet is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. Calumet was once the center of Michigan's copper mining industry.
There are several places of interest in Calument.
- The Calumet Historic District features numerous old buildings and historic landmarks.
- The Calumet Colosseum is the oldest continuously operating ice rink in North America.
- The Calumet and Hecla Library is at 101 Red Jacket Avenue.
- The Calumet Theatre opened in 1900, making it one of the earliest municipal theatres in the United States. When the copper mines closed, it fell into disrepair. After 1975, the town began projects to restore delapidated buildings, including the theater.
- The Calumet Visitor Center is a museum that shows the history of the region's copper mining industry.
- The the Copper Country Firefighters Museum is housed in the Red Jacket Fire Hall that dates from 1898. It is located on 6th Street.
- The Keweenaw Storytelling Center is located in a historic Woolworth's building in Calumet's Historic District.
- The Lions Park is a park with a lake. There are numerous hiking trails as well.
- The sandstone St. Paul the Apostle Church used to be called St. Joseph's Catholic Church. It was founded by Slovenian immigrants in 1889. The church burned down in 1902, but it was rebuilt by 1908.
- Other nationalities, who worked in the copper mined, founded their own churches including St. Anne's (the French church), St. John's (the Croatian church), St. Mary's (the Italian church), and St. Joseph's. Many other churches have been demolished, but the buildings of the former Lutheran churches and the Presbyterian church are still standing.
Calumet is about 1,300 km northwest of Washington D.C.
