Cayos Cochinos (Hog Islands)
The Cochinos Cays, or Hog Islands consist of the 2 islands of Cayo Menor and Cayo Grande and 13 small coral cays, all of which are privately owned. They are 30 km (19 mi) off Honduras' Caribbean coast, not far from La Ceiba.
The islands were originally inhabited by Maya Indians and conquistador Cortés once tried to farm on the islands.
The Cochinos Cays are excellent for snorkeling and scuba diving. In the ocean near some of the islands are black coral reefs. At Nueva Armenia, 30 km east of La Ceiba, boats can be hired to take you to the Cayos Cochinos.
On one of the islands is an expensive resort, but you should be able to camp on any of the other cays after you get permission from the owners.
On Cayo Grande are some hiking trails, as well as a lighthouse. On Cayo Menor is a scientific research station.
The islands are a marine protected area.
