Changbaishan Nature Reserve is a 210,000 hectares large area of dense virgin forests and mountains. China's largest national park sits in the southeast of the Jilin province and straddles the border with North Korea.
The park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including protected birds, such as cranes and the rare Manchurian tigers. Mount Paektu, on the (disputed) border with North Korea is an old volcanic peak that rises some 2194 m above sea level. In the crater, which is 13 km in circumference, Tianchi (Lake of Heaven) has formed. The area around the lake is one of the park's most scenic places and offers excellent terrain for hiking. There are several hot springs in its vicinity. The Changbai Waterfall sits in the Erdaobai River, which runs off the Lake of Heaven.
The nearest town to the park is Hepingyinzi and accommodation is available there. Also in Changbaishan Nature Reserve is the Green Deep Pool, where a 25 m high waterfall flows into the pond. The water in the pond has a greenish color. You can get there from Silver Ring Lake, where walking tours to the waterfall are organized. The Underground forest is also worth a visit. it is a crater full of trees. Changbaishan Daxiagu is a scenic canyon.
There is a shuttle bus connecting various sites and accommodation is availble in the park.
