Changsha is the capital of the Hunan Province in Central China. The city has had several different names in the past, including Linxiang (临湘), Tanzhou (潭州) and Qingyang (青阳). It was founded on the Xiangjiang River around 500 BC.
Tourism is very important for Changsha and there are several interesting sites in and around the city. Yuelu Academy and the Changsha Meixihu International Culture and Arts Centre is an important cultural complex. Mount Yuelu is located on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River. Orange Island in the middle of the river is the largest sandbar in the river. There is a statue of (young) Mao Zedong and Wen Tiantai on the island. The Yuelu Mountain Scenic Area boasts almost 1000 different plant species, including many endangered ones. In the southeast of the beautiful town of Huaming Tower is Hua Ming Lou, which was once the residence of revolutionary hero and former president Liu Shaoqi. Hunan Museum is the largest comprehensive history and art museum in Hunan Province. Other places of interest are Meixi Lake Park, Changsha IFS Tower, Window of the World, Kaifu Temple and Changsha Ice World.
Changsha is a good place to stay if you want to visit the numerous Maoist pilgrimage sites that lie scattered in the area around the city.
