Chongqing (重庆)
Chongqing is a large city on the
Yangzi River in the
Sichuan province. It was China's provisional capital during the years of the Sino-Japanese war from 1937 to 1945 and as a reslut there are several WWII-related sites in town:
- People's Liberation Monument used to be the highest construction in the area, but nowadays it's dwarfed by surrounding skyscrapers. It used to be called 'Monument for the Victory over Axis Armies'.
- The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is dedicated to WWII General 'Vinegar Joe' Stilwell.
- The air force cemetery is in the Nanshan area. It commemorates air force personnel killed during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
- Red Rock Village Museum was a diplomatic site for the Communist Party in Chongqing during World War II.
- The Memorial of Great Tunnel Massacre is an old air-raid shelter where a major massacre occurred during World War II.
- Guiyuan, or Cassia Garden, was the place where where Mao Zedong signed the peace agreement in 1945.
Other places of interest and museums include:
- The The Great Hall of the People in Chongqing is based on the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. It is one of the largest public buildings in China.
- Adjacent to the Great Hall is Chongqing's central district, which features many narrow streets and pedestrian only walkways.
- Luohan Si is a Ming dynasty temple.
- The Three Gorges Museum
has an exhibition on Chongqing and the Three Gorges.- Chongqing Art Museum is not interesting for its exhibitions, but for its striking architecture.
- Chongqing Science and Technology Museum has an IMAX theater.
Other attraction in Chongqing include its zoo that is home to several rare species such as the giant panda, the rare South China tiger and the African elephant. Chongqing Amusement Park and Chongqing Grand Theater are also worth a visit.
There are numerous cities and towns that are included in Chongqing's municipality, many of which boast intersting sites. Some of them include:
- The Hongya Cave, or Hongya-dong is the location of traditional Bayu-style stilted houses. The stilt house fortress there served as one of the 17 city gates of Ancient Chongqing.
- Huangguan Escalator is the second longest escalator in Asia.
- The Dazu Rock Carvings are in Dazu county. They are Chinese religious sculptures and carvings from as far back as the 7th century. The carvings and statues are listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
- In Wulong Karst National Geology Park you can see Three Natural Bridges, as well as Furong Cave. These are also a iUNESCO world heritage site.
- Ciqikou was founded around 1000 AD. It sits on the Jialing River, in the Shapingba District of Chongqing.
- Fishing Town, sometimes referred to as 'Fishing City' is famous for being the ancient battlefield where Mongol armies were resisted during the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279).
- Xueyu Cave in Fengdu County is the only pure-white, jade-like karst cave in China. It is also known as the 'snowy jade cave'.
- Fengdu Ghost City is in Fengdu County. In traditional Chinese literature it is the Gate of Hell.
- Baidi Cheng is a scenic peninsula in Yangtze River.
- Heishangu is the Black Mountain Valley.
- The Baiheliang Underwater Museum is China's first underwater museum.
- Wuxi County is a major tourism area for the people of Chongqing.
Chongqing is a good place to stay if you want to visit the hot springs that are found both northeast and south of town. To the north is the Three Gorges Dam.
