Christmas Island National Park was first established in 1980 on a part of Christmas Island. It was expanded in 1986 and 1989 and nowadays includes almost all of the island. There is a wide variety of plant and animal life in the park. The most interesting feature is the annual migration of around 100 million red crabs that move to the sea to spawn. Christmas Island National park is home to several endangered bird species.

Some interesting sites inside the park are The Dales and Hugh's Dale waterfall.
