Cidade Velha means Old City and it was the very first settlement the Portuguese built in Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) and the first European colonial settlement in the tropics. The town was founded in 1462 and it is the country's former capital. Cidade Velha used to be called Ribeira Grande, but its name was changed in the 18th century, when Praia replaced it as capital.

The town was added to UNESCO's list of world heritage sites in 2009.
