Coffs Harbour
Coffs Harbour is locally referred to as simply Coffs. The area was originally inhabited by the Gumbaynggirr people. Coffs harbour has long been an agricultural region (especially bananas), but nowadays it is a major beach resort. There are some nice beaches north of town. A small natural reef provides for excellent scuba diving.
There are several places of interest in Coffs Harbour. The Coffs Harbour Jetty is a timber wharf that was once important for the transportation of timber from the area. The Solitary Islands Marine Park preserves a diverse underwater ecosystem. It includes Muttonbird Island, which can be reached on foot from the end of the harbour's breakwater. There is a viewing platform on the island where whales are often spotted during the winter.
There are many nature reserves in the area around Coffs Harbour. They include:
- West of Bellingen is the Bellinger River National Park.
- Bindarri National Park is 20 km west of Coffs harbour, not far from Ulong and Dairyville.
- Bongil Bongil National Park is south of Sawtell.
- Cascade National Park, north of Dorrigo.
- Junuy Juluum National Park is also north of Dorrigo.
- Nymboi-Binderay National Park. On the Nymboida River north of Dorrigo and east of Glenreigh.
- Just south of Dorrigo is Dorrigo National Park.
- Coffs Coast Regional Park includes several beachside reserves and parks along the Coffs Coast.
- Hayden Dent Nature Reserve is to the northwest of Coffs Harbour.
- Moonee Beach Nature Reserve can be found at Moonee Beach-Emerald Beach.
- The forementioned Solitary Islands Marine Park is in the Tasman Sea from Coffs Harbour to Wooli.
- South Solitary Island lies inside this marine park, some 18 km to the northeast from Coffs Harbour.
- Ulidarra National Park is in the Bruxner Park and Mount Coramba area.
- Yuraygir National Park covers a wide area stretching from Yamba to Red Rock and west along the Coast Range.
The Coffs Harbour Regional Botanic Garden is home to a wide variety of regional fauna.
Accommodation and eateries are widely available in Coffs Harbour. Drinking water comes from the Orara River at Cochranes Pool and is supplemented by the Nymboida River. Coffs Harbour is 435 km northeast of Sydney and 675 km northeast of Canberra.
