Corniglia
Corniglia is the 3rd town of the 5 villages that comprise Cinque Terre and the only one that is not directly situated by the sea. It is located, high on the hillside and it can be accessed by climbing the Lardarina, which consists of 383 steps, by road.
Corniglia was laid out along this road, which is called Fieschi Road.
The town has a view-point, from where you can see the other 4 Cinque Terre villages.
13th century documents suggest that a castle once existed in Corniglia, but remains of it were never found.
Points of interest
- The ruins of Genoese Fortifications are perched on a cliff. The fortifications date from 1556.
- The Chiesa San Pietro (Saint Peter Parish Church) was built between 1334 and 1351.
Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Vernazza is about 350 km northwest from Rome.
