Corsica

Corsica

Corsica is one of the most scenic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The island has beautiful mountains, which are excellent for hiking, as well as numerous fantastic beaches. Although Corsica has been under French control since the 1700's, the islanders have retained a unique culture with a distinctive language. A movement exists that fights for Corsica's independence, but so far the only thing that has been allowed is to interprete French laws to the island's specific needs.

There are several interesting sights on the island, including the capital of Ajaccio, which was the birthplace of Napoleon. His ancestral home, Maison Bonaparte, has been converted into a museum. The mountains of Calanques de Piana, as well as the towns of Citadelle of Bonifacio and Calvi are also popular destinations.

Corsica is best visited in the months of May and June. Later in the season it gets very crowded with tourists. The island has air and boat connections with the mainland of France, as well as several European cities. Accommodation and restaurants are widely available in most towns on Corsica.
