Cyangugu used to be known as Shangugu. It sits on the southern shore of Lake Kivu, 140 km southwest of Kigali, on the other side of the Ruzizi River from the town of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. You can cross the river via two bridges and a dam. Cyangugu is beautifully situated on a hilllside, but there is little of interest to travellers. The surrounding area is mainly covered with tea and cotton plantations.
The nearby Nyungwe Forest Reserve is home to buffalo, chimpanzee, elephant, leopard and several other species of mammals and birds.
There is not much accommodation in Cyangugu and you will also find very few restaurants in town. Cyangugu has matatu (mini bus) and ferry connections with other towns in Rwanda. The border with Burundi is within walking distance from the town center.
