Cyrenaica (Barqah, برقة)

Cyrenaica, or Kyrenaika, is locally known as Barqah (برقة). Cyrenaica includes the eastern part of Libya.

The coastal region was known as Pentapolis ('5 Cities') in antiquity. These 5 cities were:

Apollonia used to serve as the port of Cyrene. It is nowadays Marsa Susa.
Cyrene .
Euesperides was later known as Berenice and it is contemporary Benghazi.
Ptolemais.
Tauchira, or Teuchira was later called Arsinoe and is nowadays known as Tocra .

In 1911, Cyrenaica became an Italian colony. The British ruled it from 1943 to 1951, after which it became a part of independent Libya.
