Cyrenaica, or Kyrenaika, is locally known as Barqah (برقة). Cyrenaica includes the eastern part of Libya.

The coastal region was known as Pentapolis ('5 Cities') in antiquity. These 5 cities were:
In 1911, Cyrenaica became an Italian colony. The British ruled it from 1943 to 1951, after which it became a part of independent Libya.
