Dalian (大连市)

The large port city of Dalian is in the southern part of the Liaoning province in northeastern China. It used to be known as Dalniy and Port Arthur.

Dalian's mild climate and its good beaches have made it a popular tourist destination. Some of the most popular beaches include Jinshitan Golden Coast (金石滩黄金海岸) beach, Fujiazhuang (付家庄) beach, Bangchuidao (棒棰岛) beach, Xinghai Park (星海公园) beach, Xinghai Bay (星海湾) beach and Xiajiahezi (夏家河子) beach. Inner-city districts

Zhongshan Square (中山广场) was designed by Russians during the 19th century. Around the square are several classical 20th-century buildings, constructed by the Japanese.
L&acaron;oh&ucaron;tān Ocean Park (老虎滩) includes several large aquaria, each of which shows a certain portion of the ocean. The Polar Region Marine Animals World and the Coral Aquarium are the most popular ones. There is also the World of Birds. The park also offers a white whale and dolphin show. Nearby is the Tigers Sculpture Square.
Xinghai Square (星海广场) sits at the Xinghai Bay. It is the largest city square in the world.
Heishijiao Geological Park and Dalian Natural History Museum.

Bangchuidao Scenic Area is a beautifully maintained park that has been in use as a State Guesthouse since 1960. It features lavish greens, Chinese and Western style villas, hot spring, tennis courts, badminton courts, a recreation center, a golf course and the Bangchuidao beach. From the beach there are good views over Bangchui Island (棒棰岛).

Lüshunkou District (in the southwestern suburbs)

Lüshun Railway Station.
East Jiguan Mountain (东鸡冠山), Hill 203 and Shuishiying Meeting Place were sites of the Battle of Lüshun during the Russo-Japanese War. The ceasefire treaty was also signed there.
Japanese and Russian Prison Site Museum in Lüshun. The prison was built by Russians in 1902 and later expanded by the Japanese. During World War II, the prison was used to detain people of various nationalities who were against the Japanese invasion.
Lüshun Snake Museum, Lüshun Bird Port and Snake Island Reservation.
Hengshan Temple (横山寺) is not far from Longwangtang Reservoir (龙王塘水库). The temple dates back to the Han dynasty, but the original was destroyed. The current temple is an exact copy of the original and dates from 2003.

There are several hot spring hotels in Dalian. The city also boasts several ski resorts. Including Linhai Ski Resort in Ganjingzi District, Anbo Ski Resort in Pulandian District, Minghu Ski Resort & Minghu International Skiing Holiday Village in Wafangdian and Dalian Happy Snow World in Ganjingzi District close to the airport. Dalian is trying to profile itself as 'the Hong Kong of the north', but in the past years it has been somewhat chaotic, as new buildings are constructed everywhere.

Accommodation is widely available, though quite expensive. The same can be said for the city's restaurants. Dalian is on the southern tip of the Liaodong peninsula, 445 km east of Beijing.
