Datong (大同)

Datong is a dusty mining city in China's Shanxi province, some 250 km west of Beijing.
There are several intersting sites in Datong. The Nine-Dragon Wall, the monastery of Huáyán Sì (华严寺) and the Shanhua Temple. The city's 14th century defensive walls have been reconstructed during the 2010s.
Datong is a good place to stay if you want to visit the Yungang Grottoes some 10km away. In the shallow caves you can see more than 50,000 carved images and statues, most of which date from the 11th century. Also close to the city is the stunning Hanging Temple
