The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area includes the Delaware Water Gap, a scenic gorge that the Delaware River cut through the Kittatinny Mountains. The gorge is 3.2 km (2 miles) long. The area also includes parts of the wooded Kittatinny Mountains, several islands and about 64 km (40 miles) of river bank, known as the Delaware National Scenic River, where kayaking, canoeing and rafting can be prctised. Other activities in the recreation area include hiking, rock climbing, swimming, fishing, hunting, camping, cycling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. The park includes numerous waterfalls and historic sites.
The area was historically known as 'the Minisink' and inhabited by the Munsee peoples. The National Recreation Area was originally established to offset a large area north of the Water Gap that would be flooded after constructing a dam there. The dam was ultimately canceled and the land to be flooded was added to the recreation area. The area is located in a mountain resort area around Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania, not far from the Pennsylvania-New Jersey line.
