Dubuque

Dubuque is one of the oldest cities in Iowa. It was named for Julien Dubuque, who was one of the first settlers in the area in 1785. Native claims to the territory ended with the Black Hawk Treaty of 1832, after which white settlers started to arrive in large numbers. The city was founded in 1833.

Iowa's first newspaper, the Du Buque Visitor, was established there in 1836. In the beginning, Dubuque developed as a mining town, while later lumbering and milling became important.

Dubuque is the seat of the University of Dubuque, Clarke College and Loras College.
