East Lansing
East Lansing is a residential suburb of Michigan's state capital of Lansing.
The city was originally known as College Park, but it was renamed when it was incorporated in 1907. East Lansing is the seat of Michigan State University (MSU).
On the university campus
- The Abrams Planetarium and the MSU Observatory started operations in 1970.
- The Beaumont Tower was built in 1928. The tower is 32 m (104 ft) tall and it is located on the site of College Hall, which collapsed in 1918.
- The Breslin Center is a multi-purpose arena that was built in 1989.
- The CATA Bus Station.
- The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum is a contemporary art museum that opened in 2012.
- The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams is a scientific facility for nuclear science. It was formerly known as the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory.
- The Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens is home to more than 5,000 different plant species.
- The MSU Federal Credit Union was founded in 1937. It is the largest university-based credit union in the world.
- The MSU Forest Akers Golf Courses.
- The MSU Pavilion was built in 1996.
- The Red Cedar River is 82.2 km (51.1 mi) long and flows through the campus of Michigan State University.
- The Rock is a 5 ft high boulder that was originally placed near Beaumont Tower. It is the location of different venues, when it is sprayed with graffiti.
- The outdoor Spartan Stadium opened in 1923.
- The Sparty is the nickname of the Spartan, which is the large statue that represents the MSU mascot. It is a landmark that is often used for finding your way around the campus.
- The Wharton Center for the Performing Arts consists of the Great Hall and Pasant Theatre of Michigan State University. It also includes the Fairchild Theatre and the MSU Auditorium.
- The W.J. Beal Botanical Garden opened in 1873, making it the oldest botanical garden in the United States. It is home to a variety of plants.
Off campus
- The Coral Gables was originally a roadhouse in the 1920s. It was converted into a square-dance hall in the 1930s, a big band showcase in the 1940s, a rock 'n' roll diner in the 1950s and a restaurant in the late 1960s. In 2004 it was reinvented as a multidisciplinary arts endeavor.
- The East Lansing Family Aquatic Center.
- The East Lansing Public Library.
- The Habitrail is also known as the Hamster Cage, or the Gerbil Cage. It consists of a large multicolored parking structure, located not far from MSU campus. It got its name, as it resembles a Habitrail home for pet rodents. On the ground floor is the contemporary art gallery of Scene Metrospace.
- The Hannah Community Center was originally East Lansing High School. it is home to the Albert A. White Performing Arts Theater.
- The Saper Galleries is an international contemporary art gallery. It was established in 1978. it is located in Albert Avenue.
- The Scene Metrospace is a contemporary art gallery. It is located on the ground floor of the Habitrail multicolored parking structure.
- The Trowbridge Railroad Junction is a popular place for train-spotters.
Around East Lansing
- The city of Lansing is adjacent to East Lansing. In Lansing you can see the State Capitol, the Hall of Justice (Supreme Court) and Michigan Library and Historical Center.
- Lake Lansing features a nice beach that is excellent for swimming, sunbathing, boating and fishing.
- Meridian Mall opened in 1969. It is located in the suburb of Okemos.
Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. East Lansing is on the Red Cedar River in the south of Michigan, some 760 km northwest of Washington D.C.
