El Alamein (العلمين)
El Alamein, or al-'Alamayn, is a coastal city some 100 km west of Alexandria. It is best known for the battles fought there in WWII and there are thousands of graves where war victims are buried. You can learn more about the battles in the War Museum west of town. In the museum there is also an exhibition on the wars with Israel in 1967 and 1973.
There are some good beaches near the town. El Alamein can be reached by bus and train from Alexandria. The city was founded on the site of the ancient city Antiphrai.
