El Paso is a border-city on the Rio Grande river, across from the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez.
There are several places of interest in El Paso. Ysleta Mission is the oldest continuously operated parish in Texas. The Cathedral of Saint Patrick was built in 1916. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of El Paso. The Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the peaceful settlement of the Chamizal boundary dispute. The Rio Grande had shifted but the border still followed the old river bed, causing the dispute between Mexico and the United States. The dispute was formally settled on 14 January 1964. El Paso Zoo is a 35-acre (14 ha) facility that is home to more than 200 species of animals. Historic buildings in El Paso include Magoffin Home, built in 1875; Plaza Hotel; Union Depot; El Paso High School and the University of Texas at El Paso, which has a distinctive style known as Dzong that resembles a fortress. This type of architecture is often found in Bhutan and Tibet.
