Fjordland National Park is a wilderness of mountains and a glacier-carved coastline that gave the park its name. Milford Sound is especially spectacular: visiting cruise ships are dwarfed by towering mountains and there are numerous beautiful waterfalls. The whole region is excellent for hiking. There are several routes through the park, such as the Routeburn Track (in neighboring Mt. Aspiring National Park), the Hollyford Valley and the Milford Track, which is claimed to be one of the 'finest in the world'.
In 1990, a large part of Te Wāhipounamu was inscribed into the UNESCO world heritage list. Fjordland National Park is home to a wide range of animal species, including a number of endangered ones, such as the takahē, mōhua, kākāpō and the southern brown kiwi.
